Enrichment Develops Skillsets

Our students continue to make rapid progress in not only their projects, but also in the development of their career skillsets.

Last Monday, AI interns learned the Random Forest Classifier technique from MIT scientist Dr. Mikhail Shalaginov in a small-group lecture.

Last Tuesday, our nanotechnology students attended Dr. Yuan Lu’s Harvard Summer School nanotechnology lecture, to both inform their own research and to work towards earning their nano fabrication certifications. Later in the day, Harvard Principal Scientist Dr. Arthur McClelland taught them jhow to use Raman spectroscopy, an advanced materials characterization technique.

On Friday, Burns & McDonnell Senior Analyst Dimitri Kupov spoke to students about machine learning lifecycle research design and techniques. He provided individualized suggestions and expert comments to students’ projects. Later, over free lunch, each AI student gave a presentation on their project’s progress, refining their public speaking skills.

Student Birthday Celebrations

On July 11th, two students, Mathieu Wang and Eric Chen, celebrated their birthdays, which happened to be on the same day! Students, RAs, and supervisors alike gathered around the kitchen to sing happy birthday and eat cake in celebration of our two wonderful students.

Dimitri Kupov Speaker Event Recap

Last Friday, Dimitri Kupov, a Senior Analyst at Burns & McDonnell, joined us to teach about machine learning lifecycle research design and techniques. An expert in deploying AI solutions in industrial-level projects, he imparted wisdom onto students.

“I learned about tools that automate the process of searching for the best models and that automatically find the best parameters for those models,” says AI student Sherry Zhang.

“He really cared about everyone’s projects,” commented nano student Cindy Yao. “He tried to let every present their projects to see how the things he talked about in his lecture could apply to everyone’s individual advice.”

We thank Dimitri wholeheartedly for helping the students immensely and for preparing such a comprehensive, relevant talk.
